Effect of Rabbit Serum to Gentamicin Bactericidal Activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract
The bactericidal interaction of rabbit serum andl gentamicin against Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated.
Combination of gentamicin and normal rabbit serum at concentrations at which there was no killing by the agents when used alone was found to be bactericidal for Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Inactivated serum by heating at 56¡ÆC for 30 min had no bactericidal effect when combined with gentamicin, suggesting that the synergism between gentamicin and serum is complement dependent.
Preincubation with gentamicin followed by addition of serum resulted in very little killing of the bacteria. In contrast, preincubation. with serum followed by addition of gentamicin produced a significant killing, indicating that serum treatment prepares the microorganis.ns for antibiotic killing.
